The cantilever chair design is a hallmark of early 20th century modernism. It emerged from bauhaus and related movements. Designers like Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, Lilly Reich and later Mies van Der Rohe played key roles in popularising chairs that didn’t have rear legs, instead using the strength and flexibility of the metal frame to support the sitter.
